Poison? You bet your sweet aspartame!

Artificial sweeteners are becoming more and more common in our food, particularly Aspartame (951).

Aspartame is made up of;

  • 40% aspartic acid – too much can cause serious neurological disorders
  • 50% Phenylalanine – excess levels in the brain can decrease levels of serotonin (our good mood, calming neurotransmitter)
  • 10% Methanol – breaks down to formic acid and formaldehyde – a deadly neurotoxin.

Did you know? Splenda was discovered in 1975 by a graduate student who was doing research on insecticides!

I just assumed artificial sweeteners were found in diet food and drinks. Na-ah.
To name just a few:

  • Yoghurt
  • Mints
  • Vitamins – quality matters and that is why we use the best available
  • Rice crackers
  • Cordials
  • Juices
  • Sausages
  • Instant coffee drinks

There are a vast array of symptoms and ailments linked to Aspartame

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Dizziness
  • Seizures
  • Numbness
  • Rashes
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Racing heart (tachycardia)
  • Insomnia
  • Memory loss
  • Joint pain
  • Hearing loss

I think I need a Bex and good lie down!

Look for numbers with a ‘9′ at the front to identify artificial sweeteners.

Artificial sweeteners may interfere with the body’s natural ability to “count” calories. It seems they may dial down our brain’s ability to tell us, “get your hand out of the bikkie barrel Beryl!”

So what can you do? Be informed and aware of what you a consuming. Get familiar with numbers to avoid (email me for a more expansive list)
